Applying In Person

  • You can also apply by going to the Sassa office near you.
  • After going to the office, ask them to give you an application form.
  • The sassa workers will give you a form & you have to fill the form with your details.
  • You have to fill the form in the presence of a sassa officer.
  • If you need any help filling out the form, you can ask Sassa agents to help you, and they will guide you.

Who qualifies for Old age grant? 

SASSA has specific eligibility criteria for qualifying for the old age grant. The criteria are given below.

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa, live there permanently, or be a refugee. 
  • Your age must be 60 or above than 60 years.
  • You must not be living in a place of government. 
  • There must not be any kind of grant/help you are getting.
  • You and your partner need to pass a means test to see if you qualify.
  • You shouldn’t make more than R86,280 a year if you’re single. You and your partner shouldn’t make more than R172,560 a year if you’re married.
  • If you’re single, your things shouldn’t be worth more than R1,227,600. If you’re married, the things you and your partner own together shouldn’t be worth more than R2,455,200.

Means Test For SASSA Older Age Grant

The Means Test for the Older Age Grant is used to check how much money and things you own before getting this grant. It’s used to ensure the grant goes to people who need it. There are two kinds of means tests. One is the assets threshold & the other is the income threshold.

Income Threshold (The money you earn)

  • You shouldn’t be earning more than R96,840 in a year if you’re single.
  • If you’re married, you and your partner should earn no more than R193,680 in a year.

Assets Threshold (Things/Property you own)

  • If you’re single, your things (like your house, car, savings) shouldn’t be worth more than R1,372,800.
  • If you’re married, everything you and your partner own shouldn’t be worth more than R2,745,600.
